THE WHITE HOUSE PROJECT ANNOUNCES

ROSTER OF EVENTS CELEBRATING WOMEN IN POLITICS AT

2008 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION

Special Guests to Include Governors Janet Napolitano and Jennifer Granholm, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and Senators Barbara Boxer, Debbie Stabenow, Claire McCaskill, and Amy Klobuchar 

New York– Today, The White House Project, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization which works to advance a richly diverse, critical mass of women into leadership positions, announced an impressive roster of events celebrating women in politics at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.  The events, which promise to draw together thousands of attendees at this year’s historic convention in honor of women’s leadership, will feature influential leaders in the political arena and media landscape, including Governors Janet Napolitano and Jennifer Granholm, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and Senators Barbara Boxer, Debbie Stabenow, Claire McCaskill, and Amy Klobuchar 

“The 2008 election cycle has been historic on so many fronts, including an unprecedented interest among women in the election,” said Marie Wilson, President of The White House Project.  “There is no better time or place to celebrate the leadership of our nation’s women than this year’s conventions.” 

The scheduled events in Denver include: 

  • “Unconventional Women” – Monday, August 25th

8AM – 2PM, Buell Theater (950 13th Street)

A historic, nonpartisan symposium uniting over 3,000 women, featuring Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Senators Barbara Boxer, Debbie Stabenow, Claire McCaskill, and Amy Klobuchar, and White House Project President Marie Wilson, among others.  In partnership with Hunt Alternatives Fund.   

  • “From Soundbites to Solutions: Bias, Punditry, & the Press in the 2008 Election” – Tuesday, August 26th

3PM – 5PM, Starz Film Center (900 Auraria Parkway)

Panel featuring senior media and political pundits from Newsweek, NPR, CNN, Salon.com, The Nation, and MSNBC. 

  • The White House Project’s 10th Anniversary Celebration – Wednesday, August 27th

6PM – 9PM, Denver Newspaper Agency (101 West Colfax)

Paying tribute to women’s leadership and 10 years of The White House Project’s work to advance women into positions of leadership across sectors.  Speakers will include Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, and Marie Wilson, among others. 

  • Celebration of Shirley Chisholm – Thursday, August 28th

2PM – 4PM, Denver Newspaper Agency (101 West Colfax)

Honoring Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress, and first black woman to run for the presidency on a major party ticket.  Featured guests include Congresswoman Barbara Lee, President of the 2008 Denver Committee Elbra Wedgeworth, Former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb, President of Mills College Janet Holmgren, and Marie Wilson.

The White House Project will also hold a series of events at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.  The organization has made national headlines for its ground-breaking political leadership program, Vote, Run, Lead, which has trained over 5,000 women to lead a political life, and for its innovative campaigns, including “8 for 08” – a widely-referenced voting campaign conducted with Parade Magazine that announced eight female candidates for the 2008 presidential election, including Senator Clinton. 

A frequent commentator on the 2008 election cycle, Marie Wilson has penned op-eds on the presidential race for the Washington Post and CNN online, and is a regularly featured blogger for the Huffington Post.  She has been profiled in The New York Times “Public Lives” column, has appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, CNN, National Public Radio and other national programs and is quoted widely for her expertise on women’s leadership.  Wilson is the author of “Closing the Leadership Gap: Why Women Can and Must Help Run the World,” which was reissued in January of 2008.
