How To Become A Politician

June 22, 2010

The White House Project, a non-profit and non-partisan organization, is helping train the politicians of the future.

NY Money Authority Lisa Murphy checked out a training session of aspiring political leaders held at Columbia University.

Along with tips on how to get started, like running for city council or your local school board, Lisa found that The White House Project gets right down to the nitty gritty of political life: money and campaigning. The organization shared the following salary information for elected leaders.

NYC councilmembers: $112,500; mayor: $225,000; NY governor: $179,000

U.S. Congress members: $174,000

Speaker of the House: $223,500

President of the United States: $400,000

Considering there is little job security for an elected official, teachers with the White House Project also emphasize the importance of campaigning, organizing, networking and fundraising.
